LICARA nanoScan

A qualitative online risk-benefit assessment tool for early life cycle analysis of innovative (nano)products.

For any innovative product, it is important to balance between risks and benefits as early as possible in the product development. The LICARA nanoScan provides a first, quick, qualitative assessment to scan the risks and benefits of innovative nanoproducts, so that relevant ‘red flags’ can be identified in time and to balance these against the benefits in an easy-to-use visualization. This allows a pro-active approach towards the elimination and mitigation of potential risks in early stages and thus ensures sustainable development of the products along their innovation value chain, i.e. safety-by-design. The LICARA nanoScan follows a “cradle to grave” approach, to support the further analysis of the product with a lifecycle assessment methodology.

The LICARA nanoScan is a web-based tool that guides companies through their decision-making process for the sustainable development of new, innovative products. It is a simple, yet effective, tool for a quick risk-benefit analysis over a product’s entire life cycle at an early innovation stage where limited information is available. For nano-product-specific innovation, we offer the well-known LICARA nanoScan. For non-nano products, TNO has recently introduced the LICARA Innovation Scan.

LICARA Scan uses the principles of Life Cycle Assessment, Risk Assessment, and Multi-Criteria Decision Assessment to evaluate (i) product benefits in terms of its economic, environmental, and social opportunities and (ii) specific risks for consumers, workers, the general public and the environment.

The final outcome of the product’s strengths and weaknesses includes uncertainties and knowledge gaps about the product development which supports product manufacturers and their stakeholders in their decision-making process.
